Our annual summer leadership program, Splash of LA, has also come a long way! What began as a small event is now a grand event that friends and families look forward to every summer. Splash of LA 2017 was a hit!
Bigger than ever, Splash of LA 2017 was a fantastic affair. On August 5, we gathered underneath tents, and enjoyed an afternoon packed with festivities. April - August of this year, Kid City students and volunteers planned in unison with staff to create this family-fun event. Kids from the neighborhood enjoyed games and activities created by our students. Volunteers literally took a splash in the dunk tank, including: Rev. Janet Gollery McKeithen from United Methodist Church Ocean Park; Kid City's Program Director, Laura Cuellar; and Kid City's Band Director and Music Instructor, Colin Deas.
Upon entering, guests were greeted with warm welcomes from the 2017 Urban Foundation and Kid City interns. Feet tapped and hands clapped all afternoon while the Kid City band performed. The Kid City dancers dazzled the crowd, and and at one point attendees formed a salsa line which danced its way throughout the tent. Scattered throughout, children played chess, created art, and had their faces painted. Families enjoyed the food Kid City interns sold: tacos, raspados, agua fresca, and hot cheeto nachos(!).
While many of our attendees included friends and family of Kid City members, plenty neighborhood businesses and schools also attended. Our local businesses and organizations: Green Tree Yoga, Grid Alternatives, the Girl Scouts participated. And colleges including University of Southern California, Los Angeles Valley College, and East Los Angeles College were there to show support and provide information on attending their schools. The ACLU of Southern California helped provide “Know Your Rights” information and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center provided family preparedness plans.
There were a plethora of fun activities throughout the day; it's hard to say what brought attendees the most joy. But, a lucky few who won the raffle left with prizes from Disneyland, The Dodgers, Regal Cinemas, In 'N Out among many others!
We here at Kid City and Urban Foundation would like to send a special thank you to the Honorable José Huizar, Councilman, District 14, for providing tables and chairs. We'd also like to thank Assembly Member Miguel Santiago staff for supporting, and offering to be a dunk tank participant next year! Additionally, we'd like to thank the South Park Community Benefit District, Victor Moller and Villa Flores, our sponsors, and all of the Kid City student-led committees that helped plan such a successful event.
Splash of LA 2017 was a great hit and a wonderful way to say goodbye to summer and to send off students who are beginning or returning to college. As another school year commences, the energy and memory of Splash of LA, all of our families and their smiling faces, will encourage us and lift our spirits. We look forward to seeing you again next summer for Splash of LA 2018!
